The Texans continue shifting around the depth on their roster, trying to find a right combination to head into their offseason workouts.

The roster is being tweaked as the team moves closer to the start of their offseason workout program on April 6. Their organized training activities will start on May 18, and then finish with a minicamp from June 15-17.

In roster moves, the Texans released defensive end Earl Cochran and brought in Green Bay defensive end Mike Montgomery for a visit.

Montgomery, an unrestricted free agent who grew up in Carthage and played at Texas A&M, met with the coaches at Reliant Stadium and underwent a physical. The Texans aren't expected to offer him a contract. Montgomery has an offer to return to the Packers.

Cochran, 28, provided depth at end and tackle. In his one start last season at Indianapolis, he suffered a season-ending foot injury that required surgery. He continues to undergo rehabilitation and is expected to be ready by training camp.

Cochran received the minimum tender of $1.01 million, meaning the team had a right of first refusal if they failed to match an offer sheet he signed with another team. After the Texans signed Arizona defensive end Antonio Smith, they withdrew the tender and offered Cochran a one-year contract. He was released when they failed to reach an agreement.

The Texans told Cochran they'd like to re-sign him when he's healthy, according to agent Mark Slough.

"We're disappointed they chose this direction," Slough said. "Earl likes Houston, and he'd like to be with the Texans. Teams have inquired about Earl, but we're not in a hurry to make a decision."

The Texans have also re-signed safety Nick Ferguson, who started nine games last season.

Ferguson, 34, is a nine-year veteran who came to the Texans last season from Denver, where he played for five seasons. He's expected to compete for a starting job with second-year strong safety Dominique Barber next to free safety Eugene Wilson.

Ferguson is the fifth player to re-sign with the Texans, joining Wilson, tight end Joel Dreessen, center Chris White and defensive end Stanley McClover.

The Texans matched the offer wide receiver David Anderson received from Denver, and they signed two free agents from other teams - defensive end Antonio Smith and quarterback Dan Orlovsky.
