A lot of mock drafts around the country have the Texans using their first-round choice on an offensive player, but anybody familiar with the team knows they will select a defensive player.

The Texans finished third in offense and 22nd in defense last season.

They signed defensive end Antonio Smith to start on the left side opposite Mario Williams. They've agreed on a two-year, $3.5 million contract that will make free agent Shaun Cody part of the rotation at defensive tackle.

Smith and Cody give them flexibility in next month's draft.

"We could still use an impact player at linebacker and on the back end (secondary), but we'd be hard-pressed to take a receiver or a running back in the first round," Texans coach Gary Kubiak said during the NFL meetings. "Our first-round pick has to make a big impact on our team.

"We've made progress, and for us to make more progress, that (No. 1 pick) has to be an impact player. If that happens, the better we're going to get."

Whom the Texans take depends on who's available when they make the 15th pick, assuming they don't make a trade for the second year in a row. Last year, general manager Rick Smith traded down and selected offensive tackle Duane Brown, who started every game on the left side.

If a defensive player the Texans like falls, they could trade up a couple of spots. If they get an offer they can't resist to trade down, that's a possibility, too.

Drafting an outside linebacker and a player for the "back end," as Kubiak calls the secondary, could be done in the first two rounds. Then Kubiak and Rick Smith have to think about filling their biggest need on offense - a running back to complement Steve Slaton.

"Obviously, that's important," Kubiak said. "We went the Cedric Benson route in free agency, and it didn't work out. It's a little nerve-racking, but you can't force something.

"At least we know we have a good young one in Slaton. Hopefully, something good will happen there."
