The game against Baltimore has been postponed until 8:30 p.m. ET on Monday night due to Hurricane Ike. If the storm causes significant damage, the game could be postponed further or moved to another location like Atlanta.
"I think right now, the most important thing is just the concern for our city and everybody in the city with the storm coming, that everybody's going to be OK," coach Gary Kubiak said. "We were able to get our work done today and then I can get these coaches and these players where they should be the next two days, and that's with their families. And hopefully everything'll be alright."
Kubiak said the players will be off until Sunday morning.
"I want them to be there with their families tomorrow to prepare for this thing," he said. "And then we'll see what happens Saturday and hopefully everything's OK and we're back at it Sunday morning and we'll have a little practice before we get going."
--The Texans thought the Pittsburgh Steelers threw a confusing, blitzing and physical defense at them Sunday. It's only going to get worse this week as they play host to the Baltimore Ravens at Reliant Stadium.
The Ravens arrive in Houston boasting the league's No. 1 defense and bringing with it an offense that rushed for 229 yards against the Cincinnati Bengals in a 17-10 victory last week.
If the Texans had their choice, this may be the last team they would choose to play after last week's debacle in Pittsburgh.
The Texans struggled plenty trying to figure out the game plan of Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau. Now they must try to counter an equally blitz-crazed coordinator in Rex Ryan. He constantly blitzed against the Bengals, limiting them to just 89 yards through the air. Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer was sacked twice and knocked down five more times.
"They are even more complicated -- and Pittsburgh is as complicated as you'll see," coach Gary Kubiak said. "But the thing with Baltimore is they have all their pieces back in place. They were missing a lot of players last year. They're all back. They're all healthy. They are playing with a ton of confidence. Very, very physical team, so we have to get over this real quick and get ready to go."
The Ravens, who use a 3-4 defense like Pittsburgh, are trying to avenge last year's 5-11 record. Opponents passed with ease last season against the Ravens defense, which dealt with injuries to many of its starters, especially during the team's nine-game losing streak.
After missing many of their critical pieces throughout the entire preseason as well, the Ravens had almost every starter healthy for the season opener. It was clear early in the game the group didn't need time to adjust to playing together again.
The Ravens allowed a league-low 154 total yards to a Bengals offense that finished among the top 10 in total offenses last year. That was the Bengals' worst offensive output since the 2000 season.
None of that bodes well for a Texans offense that was so out of the game by the start of the fourth quarter that the Steelers inserted a lineup full of backups for the entire final period. Prior to the backups entering the game, the Texans had rushed for only 25 yards.
"You look at the way that they dominated the football game (Sunday), even though it was 17-10 game, it was like total dominance from their standpoint defensively," Kubiak said. "I can't pinpoint one thing that we have to do. We have to play totally better as a group, as a team, coach better. We've got to do everything better to give ourselves a chance this weekend."
And despite the Ravens starting rookie quarterback Joe Flacco on offense, the Texans defense can't get overconfident. The Ravens' offensive line played tremendously against the Bengals. Flacco finished Week 1 as the only quarterback who played from start to finish and didn't commit one turnover or absorb a sack.
The Ravens have definitely caught the attention of the Texans, who realize they will have to play much better than the previous week if they are going to have a chance of pulling out a victory.
"When you have a good game, you just can't live off of it because you did it the week before," wide receiver Andre Johnson said. "I'm pretty sure they'll want to come out and do that to us this week. It'll be a test for us. And we can't hang our heads because of what happened to us Sunday."
SERIES HISTORY: 3rd meeting. Ravens lead series, 2-0, but Texans carry a four-game winning streak at home into the contest. The most interesting game in the series was in 2005 when Texans K Kris Brown kicked his fifth field goal with 1:08 to play to give the Texans a 15-13 lead. But the Ravens ended up winning when Matt Stover kicked a 38-yard field goal with six seconds left to play.
