Houston Texans Notes, Quotes 2009-03-27
--Dallas Cowboys fans in the Houston area are going to be disappointed during preseason because their favorite team will not be coming to Reliant Stadium to play the Texans.

The Texans and Cowboys have played a home-and-home preseason series.

The Texans played at Texas Stadium in August, but the Cowboys won't be coming to Houston this year because of scheduling conflicts involving their new stadium in Arlington.

The Texans haven't found out from the NFL what team will be playing at Reliant Stadium in place of the Cowboys.

Because the Cowboys' new stadium is across the street from the Rangers Ballpark and they share parking lots, the NFL has to schedule Cowboys games around Rangers games so they don't conflict.

"We're disappointed, but we certainly understand the situation," Texans owner Bob McNair said. "I enjoy playing the Cowboys, and I think they enjoy playing us. I'm sure we'll resume the series in the future."

Preseason schedules are expected to be announced next week.

The Texans are hosting the New Orleans Saints and visiting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the league has to schedule the team another home and road game.

--The Texans ended their search for a free-agent defensive lineman Monday when they agreed to a three-year deal with Shaun Cody, a former second-round pick by Detroit.

Cody, 26, is expected to sign today. He'll compete for playing time with starters Amobi Okoye and Travis Johnson and backups DelJuan Robinson and Frank Okam.

Cody, 6-4, 310, joins defensive end Antonio Smith (Arizona) and quarterback Dan Orlovsky (Detroit) as free agents signed by the Texans.

Cody, who played at USC, was drafted in the second round in 2005. He started only 11 games in four seasons with the Lions. Four of those starts were last season when Detroit became the first 0-16 team in NFL history. He had 36 tackles, including 25 unassisted. Cody hasn't recorded a sack since his rookie season.

By signing Smith and Cody, the Texans can take care of another need position on defense rather than select an end or tackle with their first-round pick, 15th overall.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We have a scheme we believe in. We want to be a balanced offense. Our formations aren't going to be too complicated but we're going to get in a bunch of them and we're going to be balanced. We expect to leave the game running the ball just a few times less than we throw it. But it should be fairly balanced." -- Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan on the offensive philosophy.
