Houston Texans Notes, Quotes 2008-08-18
--Second-year receiver Jacoby Jones made another big mistake on a punt return Saturday night.

A week after fumbling a punt against the Denver Broncos, Jones took off running before he completely secured the ball in the first quarter against the New Orleans Saints. He ended up dropping the ball -- something the Texans had worked all week to try to avoid.

Former Texans linebacker Troy Evans recovered the fumble on the Texans' 10-yard line, and the Saints' offense got back on the field and eventually scored a field goal.

"It's a problem right now," coach Gary Kubiak said. "We're trying to push the kid through. ... He has a lot of ability. He can help us win. I don't think it's a lack of heart."

Jones, who grew up in New Orleans, said he is trying too hard to make a big play.

"I felt a guy pull me at the last minute, and I tried to run before I caught it," Jones said. "It's something I have to fix. I'm real inconsistent. And I have to fix it before we go into Week 1."

Jones returned two punts in the second half for a total of 18 yards.

--Kevin Walter spent the offseason trying to focus on improving the yards he collects after the catch. It seems to be paying off.

Walter had the best night for a receiver in preseason franchise history -- catching six passes from Matt Schaub for 100 yards and one touchdown. His longest catch was for 27 yards.

Walter said after watching a near-perfect performance from Schaub and some good outings all-around on offense, he looks forward to seeing just what this offense can do this season.

"I think this offense can be tops in the league," Walter said. "We've got to run the ball well, we have explosive players who can make plays downfield. We're going to score a lot of points this year."

--David Anderson had a mohawk at one point in the offseason. Now he has a mullet. The third-year wide receiver insists he will cut his hair soon though.

"We're the only amusement we have during camp," Anderson said. "We only get to amuse each other. So I might as well have a little fun. I grew it out and I've cut it a couple of different ways, but when the season starts I will shave it. Gotta look professional."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I'm progressively getting better, but I'm not where I think I should be. I can do more. Hopefully, I can get back to the old me. I haven't been that way since early in my first year here. I'm not trying to make excuses, but since that knee started bothering me, it really hasn't been the same. I'm close. I'm easing myself out of that brace. That's the thing that's holding me back right now." -- DE Anthony Weaver, on how he is feeling a year after undergoing knee surgery. He played last season but was slowed by the knee.
