Houston Texans Notes, Quotes 2009-04-21
--Texans DT Amobi Okoye has a sore left knee that may require an MRI. After he was honored by the Houston City Council on Tuesday for his philanthropic efforts, Okoye said he has developed soreness in his knee while running in the Texans' conditioning program.

"There's a little soreness there," he said. "Hopefully, it's nothing big. We're taking a look at it. Going out there and running, it's not really inhibiting me, but I can feel a little bit of soreness. I'll take it day by day and see if it gets worse or if it gets any better.

"I wouldn't necessarily say it's worrisome. Let's hope it doesn't get worrisome."

Coach Gary Kubiak said he will make sure the team finds out if anything is wrong.

"We'll do whatever needs to be done for Amobi to be successful," Kubiak said. "All of our guys are sore right now because they've been working so hard in the conditioning program for eight or nine days."

Okoye said he plans to wait two weeks to see if the soreness goes away. If not, he'll get the MRI to see if there's any damage.

"I went to the doctor, and he took a look at it and said it's nothing to worry about right now," Okoye said. "I hope it stays that way."

--After opening last season with three consecutive road games that contributed to an 0-4 start, the Texans must have had the NFL feeling sorry for them.

In the 2009 schedule released Tuesday, the Texans not only will be showcased at Reliant Stadium on Monday Night Football against the Tennessee Titans, they begin the season with three of four games at home, including the Sept. 13 opener against the New York Jets.

"The key right now is that we've got to get ready for the Jets," coach Gary Kubiak said. "Now that the schedule's out, we've got something to focus on."

Since the end of last season, Kubiak has stressed the importance of getting off to a successful start. Playing three of the first four at Reliant against the Jets, Jacksonville and Oakland -- none of whom made the playoffs last season -- leaves them with no excuses.

The NFL gave the Texans only one prime-time game, but it's a good one -- Nov. 23 against the Titans, who finished last season with a league-best 13-3 record.

In their first Monday night game last season, the Texans beat Jacksonville 30-17.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think players have to earn the right to play on Monday Night Football, and they gave us an opportunity last year, and our guys responded." -- Coach Gary Kubiak after the Texans were awarded their second-ever MNF game on the 2009 schedule.
