Houston Texans Notes, Quotes 2009-04-27
--Texans cornerback Dunta Robinson will report to the Texans for the conditioning program if they will agree to not put the franchise tag on him in 2010.

Robinson, who has been working out in New Jersey because he is unhappy the Texans franchised him, might miss some regular-season games if the Texans don't agree to his request. The Texans aren't expected to agree.

"Then they will not see me until sometime during the season," Robinson said. "We're supposed to start talking about a way to get me on the field. If we can't come to any kind of terms, even on that, I probably won't be around until sometime during the season."

As the franchise player, Robinson will make $9.957 million when he signs his one-year tender. If he sits out in regular season, it will cost him $585,705 a game.

"I'm willing to do what I have to do," he said. "Just make me that one promise."

Robinson would like for the Texans to agree to a plan like running back Shaun Alexander got in Seattle and cornerback Asante Samuel got in New England. They agreed to report on time if their teams agreed to not franchise them a second consecutive season.

Alexander re-signed with the Seahawks. Samuel signed with Philadelphia.

Robinson would settle for a deal like defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth received from Tennessee. He would report on time, but if he reached certain incentives, the Titans wouldn't franchise him. He signed with Washington during the offseason as a free agent.

"That would be wonderful," Robinson said. "I hope they do it, but you never know. I didn't think I'd be franchised, but I was."

Before he was franchised, Robinson turned down a multiyear contract that included $23 million guaranteed.

"I want to play football," Robinson said. "I love Houston. I love running out on the field on Sundays with my teammates. I think this is going to be a great year for us. ... I'd love to finish my career here, but I'm not going to take anything less than what I think I deserve.

"They won one battle. I'm trying to get it to where I won't be franchised again. Hopefully, I'll be back on the field sooner rather than later. Whenever I come back, I'll be ready to go, no doubt about it. I'm not a lazy guy. I'm doing everything I need to be doing. I'm not the kind of player who's going to sit back and take a break, you can be sure about that."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Well, I hope we've been removing that. But we can keep getting better on defense. We can get more athletic, tougher on that side of the ball, more physical on that side of the ball. Then, obviously, that is what we try to do with the draft, looking for impact players. We had two of them here today in (LB) Brian (Cushing) and (DE Connor) Barwin, two guys we think can make big-time impacts very quickly. Our guys out there are looking for some help, some guys to make them better. That's what we're trying to do right here. You never know what's going to happen, but we're going to put these guys to work real fast and our track record proves we're going to play these guys very quickly and these guys won't be any different. We expect them to contribute." - Coach Gary Kubiak on if the Texans are shaking their expansion team label.
