Houston Texans Notes, Quotes 2009-05-04
--Even though he graduated from the University of South Carolina, Texans owner Bob McNair also has become one of Rice's benefactors. He had nothing to do with the selection of Owls tight end James Casey, but he's glad general manager Rick Smith and coach Gary Kubiak made that decision.

So are McNair's Rice buddies.

"Oh, yeah, they're all excited," he said. "I'm happy for them. With (receiver) Jarret Dillard (Jacksonville) getting picked, too, it's great for the Rice program. They're making great strides.

"When it came time to make the pick, the debate went on like this: 'We're in great shape at tight end, so why take Casey?' to 'He's such a superb athlete who can do so many different things, how can we not take him?'"

--Since coach Gary Kubiak became their coach, the Texans haven't put together a winning record in the AFC South. They were 3-3 in 2006, 1-5 in 2007 and 2-4 last season.

Even though Tennessee lost defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and Indianapolis lost coach Tony Dungy and receiver Marvin Harrison, Kubiak doesn't expect the Titans and Colts to ease up on the Texans.

"The key to making the playoffs is to win your division," said Kubiak, who is 2-10 against the Colts and Titans. "I don't see the dynamics of our division changing."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think that the more you can improve athleticism overall with team speed, by nature, by definition, you improve your special teams. I think that is a byproduct of better position players. The more depth you have on your football team, I think, that just improves your special teams units. So, that's what we try to do, and that's just a byproduct of continuing to try and add more athleticism and speed to our football team." -- GM Rick Smith on drafting athletes to bolster special teams.
