Houston Texans Notes, Quotes 2008-08-28
--The Texans have high hopes for wide receiver Andre' Davis, who returned three kickoffs for touchdowns last season. Davis signed a multi-year deal in the offseason and returns as the team's primary kickoff returner and their third receiver.

Davis was asked at the Texans' team luncheon what he thinks about when he is returning a kickoff and going for a touchdown.

"You never worry about anybody sneaking up on you when you have this burning speed," Davis said before laughing. "No, you are running scared; you are running for your life."

-- Texans tackle Ephraim Salaam will return to practice this weekend as he prepares to return from a knee injury that kept him from participating in the preseason. The Texans fully expect him to be their top backup at both tackle positions in the season opener on Sept. 7.

"He basically told us, 'Y'all can count on me that week,'" coach Gary Kubiak said. "Now, we'll find out. He'll start working those extra days we have after this Tampa game, and we'll see where he's at. If he's not ready to do it, then at least (Rashad) Butler and (Brandon) Frye have had a ton of work, but our plan is that he's ready to go."

--After undergoing surgery to fuse two vertebrae in his spine Monday, Texans receiver Harry Williams is recovering in Presbyterian Hospital-Dallas.

Williams, 26, who would have made the team because he had become an exceptional special-teams player, won't be able to play again, but he will be able to lead a normal life after he recovers.

"Harry had made this team," coach Gary Kubiak said after practice Monday. "To go on that field and see him lying there -- I just thank the good Lord that he's going to be fine. I know we're all disappointed he won't be able to play, but that's not what's most important. I know it's a very difficult time. He has an amazing mom. He's got great support. Harry is going to be OK, and that's what's important."

Williams, who grew up in Birmingham, Ala., and played at Tuskegee, was the Jets' seventh-round pick in 2005. He spent time on practice squads with the Jets and Giants before landing with the Texans in December 2006.

"It's a scary thing," general manager Rick Smith said. "The first thing that goes through your mind is the rest of his life. That's what this league is about. That's where people don't really understand what these guys subject their bodies to. It is a sacrifice when these guys put on a helmet and go out every time on the field. That's why we appreciate it. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family."

Receiver Andre Johnson watched Williams improve after the Texans signed him.

"We're all rooting for him," Johnson said. "Coach Kubiak talked with him, and he said all (Williams) talked about was his teammates. I can't wait to see him walk through those gates to watch us practice. That'll be a great day for this team."

BY THE NUMBERS: 3 - Players (Kris Brown, Chester Pitts, DeMarcus Faggins) still on the roster from the team's inaugural season.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's been good. I've got to do a lot of things that I wasn't doing before I turned 21." -- DT Amobi Okoye, on what it is like to have finally turned 21 years old before his second NFL season.
