Houston Texans Notes, Quotes 2008-09-18
--Asked if he'd been in contact with the New Orleans Saints, who know a little bit about hurricane survival, Texans general manager Rick Smith said, "I've got (Saints general manager) Mickey Loomis on the speed dial. I believe that wise men seek wise counsel. Obviously they've experienced it. I've actually been talking to Mickey the last couple weeks about what they learned and what they would do differently."

The Saints were forced out of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city in 2005, playing their home games in San Antonio.

--Texans players are like thousands in the Houston area who suffered damage to their homes.

"We've had quite a few," coach Gary Kubiak said about players who have had damage to their houses. "Some of them had to move into hotels. We've got a tough situation to work through with our families, but it's a tough situation for just about everybody in Texas. There's some tough people in the state of Texas, so I know we're going to make this thing work."

The Texans are 0-1 after losing at Pittsburgh. Because the Baltimore game was postponed because of Ike, the Texans have three consecutive road games. The next stop is Tennessee followed by Jacksonville.

"It's a challenge," Kubiak said. "We're going to be fine. I'm worried about everyone else in this state and the problems they have and what's taken place. Our thoughts and prayers are with them."

--WR Andre Johnson grew up in Florida and played at Miami, so he's used to preparing for hurricanes. Still, he said it was tough to return to practice Tuesday.

"It's really difficult," he said. "You may not have any damage, but it's still hard to come out here because you think about the people who do have damage and the people that lost their houses and are in hotels.

"You know you easily could have been in that situation. It's a devastating time. All we can do is rally together and help each other as much as we can."

--The Texans are glad their game against Baltimore was postponed until Nov. 9. They didn't want to play Sunday or Monday in a neutral city.

"I think it'll be great that we'll still be able to play here and have our fans here," WR Andre Johnson said. "I think the important thing is for us to bring something positive to the city, rallying together as a team and winning games. It'll give the city of Houston something to be happy about."

BY THE NUMBERS: 1 -- Games under coach Gary Kubiak (since 2006) that the Texans have failed to score a touchdown.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We can't think that far down the road. We've just got to take it one week at a time and one day at a time. This is the hand that we've been dealt and we just have to play with it to the best of our advantage and take advantage of these opportunities to go out and play a game that we love to play." -- QB Matt Schaub, on if he is worried about not being able to play at home soon.
