--Texans long snapper Bryan Pittman went to Reliant Stadium early Wednesday to clean a few items out of his locker. By late afternoon, he was still struggling to accept the fact that he is no longer allowed around the facilities during his four-game suspension for violating the league's steroid policy.
Pittman did not test positive for the much talked about StarCaps diuretic, which can be used as a masking agent for steroids. But he did test positive for another diuretic that was on the league's banned list. He was one of six players suspended by the NFL Tuesday.
"Mostly, I'm frustrated that I'm being punished for something that was an innocent mistake," Pittman said. "I'm being punished for taking a performance decreaser if anything. And I'm frustrated with myself for even having to take a water pill to make my weight."
Pittman said he has exhausted all of his options, and that he will comply with the suspension and move forward. He can be reinstated with the team on Dec. 29, the day after the regular season.
This is a contract year for Pittman. He will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason. And he's coming off his most shaky season of his career. He originally received word of his suspension during the preseason.
"It's weighed on my mind ever since I received the first letter," Pittman said. "In the first quarter of the season, I had difficulty dealing with it on and off the field. Then I kind of got everything back on track, and now this."
Pittman has been the team's only long snapper since 2003. He will be replaced Sunday by former Rutgers tight end Clark Harris.
--The Texans are prepared to go forward this week with a new long snapper. They added Clark Harris to the active roster, and it's the first time he will dress for an NFL game. He was drafted by the Packers in 2007 and spent a little time on their practice squad last year.
"Of course, we've had him here previously and then brought him back," coach Gary Kubiak said. "He's been preparing as if he was going to be the snapper every week. That's how we've been working with him. So, we're way ahead of the game from that standpoint. Naturally, he's a young player and this is a tough environment for him to go do his job, but he's way ahead of the game. It's not like we're starting fresh today."
BY THE NUMBERS: 0 -- Times quarterback Matt Schaub has won on the road in his last nine starts away from home.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think it's football. Sometimes things come in bunches. It's like sacks or quarterbacks throwing touchdown passes. You just keep battling. I think we are being a little more aggressive, but we're all rallying to the ball. (We) had a few breaks. You need some breaks in this business. We haven't had many. So, maybe we'll catch up in the second half." -- Coach Gary Kubiak, on why the defense has had eight turnovers in the past two games.
