Houston Texans Notes, Quotes 2009-02-28
--Texans general manager Rick Smith admitted he told Dunta Robinson he would not use the franchise tag on the veteran cornerback, but changed his mind when they failed to agree on a long-term contract.

After the franchise designation was used on him a few hours before the 3 p.m. Thursday deadline, Robinson called Smith "dishonest" and said he was angry because the general manager had told him and agent Jason Chayut the cornerback wouldn't be tagged.

"We had a conversation very early in the negotiation process where I indicated I didn't want to use the franchise tag on Dunta," Smith said during an interview session with reporters covering the scouting combine at Lucas Oil Stadium. "I was clear about that because of the negative feelings around the tag."

The kind of negative feelings Robinson had for being the first franchise player in the team's eight year history.

"The first thing you have to understand is a negotiation is a dynamic, thorough process," Smith said. "My approach was (that) we were going to do everything we can to get a deal done because we don't want to use it.

"But things change in a negotiation. That was our initial position for him with respect to value in a contract. And we changed on that. We offered him a deal that exceeded that."

--Robinson was angry when he discovered the Texans had used the franchise designation on him.

Robinson, who became the first player in team history to get the franchise tag, wanted to make clear that it wasn't the $9.57 million he'll receive this year that infuriated him.

"I'm upset and frustrated because they were dishonest with me," Robinson said. "They told me they weren't going to franchise me. I wasn't expecting it."

General manager Rick Smith and agent Jason Chayut negotiated for weeks on a long-term contract, and when they didn't get the deal done, Smith tagged Robinson. His one-year deal means he'll receive the average salary of the five highest-paid cornerbacks in the league.

"Look, making $10 million is a blessing, even though I wanted a long-term deal," Robinson said. "But I was told I wouldn't get tagged. That's dishonest, and I'm mad about it.

"I don't appreciate him (Smith) telling my agent that I wouldn't get tagged and then doing it, anyway."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "He was beat up early in the season. I thought he got much better. He played extremely well the last half of the season. But that kid's played a lot of football, and he's not the only one. I could sit here (all day): O.D. (TE Owen Daniels) and (DE) Mario (Williams). You look at those guys since they've walked in the door here, they've been on the field every snap. And that's a great deal of football, and that's also to me why we're making progress, because those guys have to become great players for us to become a great football team. So, he's a real pro. He never says a word. He just kept working, but obviously, he was himself the back half of the season." -- Coach Gary Kubiak on linebacker DeMeco Ryans.
