Houston Texans Notes, Quotes 2009-03-11
--After the Cincinnati Bengals increased their offer to $7 million over two years on Tuesday, free-agent running back Cedric Benson had to take it.

Benson left Houston to return to Austin after considering signing with the Texans, but getting $3.5 million a year to be a starter was more appealing than getting $2.75 million a year to be a reserve.

The Bengals didn't want to lose Benson after watching WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (Seattle), OT Stacy Andrews (Philadelphia) and QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Buffalo) sign with other teams.

After being waived by Chicago last year, Benson signed a one-year contract with Cincinnati and rushed for a career-high 747 yards in 10 starts. During the Bengals' three-game winning streak at the end of the season, he averaged 118 yards rushing.

"Cedric was a great addition for us last year," Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said in a statement. "We're looking to see him pick up right where he left off."

Benson came to Houston on Monday to meet with the Texans about their vacancy to back up Steve Slaton. He had dinner with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and running backs coach Chick Harris. On Tuesday, he had a better offer from the Bengals.

Rather than return to Texas, where he grew up in Midland and played for the Longhorns, Benson accepted Cincinnati's deal.

--The Texans matched the three-year, $4.5 million offer sheet receiver David Anderson got from the Denver Broncos last week.

Anderson signed the offer sheet Friday, and the Texans had seven days to exercise their right of first refusal for the third-year restricted free agent. They didn't wait for the deadline to match the offer that included a $1 million signing bonus.

"It's a win-win situation for me," Anderson said. "Who wouldn't want to play for coach (Gary) Kubiak, coach (Kyle) Shanahan and for the Texans?

"I'm real excited about next season because I know we're going to get better."

If the Texans had not matched the offer, they would have received a seventh-round pick for Anderson, who was selected in the seventh round of the 2006 draft out of Colorado State.

The coaches wanted to keep Anderson because he's improved each season. He's also an excellent special teams player. Last season, Anderson had career bests with 19 catches for 241 yards and two touchdowns.

The Broncos wanted Anderson to be their fourth receiver.

"It was exciting when Denver made the offer," he said. "As an athlete, you wanted to be appreciated. You want to be recognized for what you've done and what you're capable of doing."

With the Texans, Anderson plays behind Andre Johnson, Kevin Walter and Andre Davis.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I always had confidence in my ability. I've always wanted to get better, and once I got to the NFL, I saw that I could make it if I continued to work hard. That's what I've done, and that's what I'll continue to do." -- WR David Anderson, after signing a three-year deal with the Texans.
