Houston Texans Strategy and Personnel 2009-03-30
The Texans are going to continue to try to fill out depth on both sides of the ball. They do not have many questions remaining as far as the starters are concerned, but they still have depth issues across the roster.

Signing Shaun Cody this week helped. He will push Travis Johnson for playing time. But linebacker, running back and cornerback and safety are still primary targets.

The Texans still need a linebacker to add to the mix on the outside. They released Morlon Greenwood, and so they plan to start Xavier Adibi and Zac Diles. But with two unproven players who had injury issues in 2008, the Texans need a player capable of starting or backing up as needed.

With the departure of Earl Cochran, the Texans do not have a lot of depth on the defensive line. They need to look in free agency for more backup possibilities and look high in the draft for a player who could come in and push for a starting job, especially at tackle.

1. Outside linebacker: The Texans have questions surrounding young starters Zac Diles and Xavier Adibi. If they could get a big play outside linebacker, it would be key for them. They had Morlon Greenwood here, but released him prior to free agency. They need someone who has some pass rush ability to help make their defense more aggressive. DeMeco Ryans will continue to be the middle linebacker and leader of the defense.

2. Cornerback: The Texans could still use some help in the secondary. They have players capable of starting, but they are lacking in depth and would like to get more playmakers. Also, they could use a higher end draft pick to challenge the starters.

3. Running back: The Texans still need a situational-type back to spell Steve Slaton. He must be a little bigger and fit well into the zone-blocking scheme. It will likely be a mid-round draft pick. The back will only likely get four to six carries each game.

MEDICAL WATCH: No updates.

FRANCHISE PLAYER: CB Dunta Robinson: Tendered at $9.957M.

--TE Mark Bruener will not be back with the team. He is likely going to go into retirement. He spent most all of last season inactive.

--CB DeMarcus Faggins is one of the few remaining original Texans. He wants the opportunity to come back and compete for a job but he was the last corner on the roster by the end of last season and he could get bumped for younger players with more upside.

--OL Scott Jackson has spent much of the past two seasons on the injured reserve list. His career is definitely in jeopardy. It's unlikely he would crack the lineup if he returns.

--LS Bryan Pittman was suspended for the final four games of last season and his replacement played well in his place and has more versatility since Pittman is strictly a long snapper. It's unlikely Pittman will return.

--RB Cecil Sapp will likely return to compete for a job. His versatility helps since he can play fullback and running back.

--CB Jimmy Williams spent all of last season on injured reserve. He could return to compete for a job.

--DT Jeff Zgonina could return for another year as a backup. The Texans like to have veterans in the locker room, and he could remain in the mix as far as defensive line depth.

--DT Earl Cochran (RFA rights terminated after being tendered at $1.01M).

--WR Harry Williams (not tendered as ERFA) had an injury to his spinal cord last year and will be forced to retire from football.

--T Rashad Butler (tendered at $1.01M with third-round pick as compensation) is improving as a player and will compete again to be one of the two backups at tackle on the offensive line.

--TE Owen Daniels (tendered at $2.792M with first- and third-round picks as compensation) just attended his first Pro Bowl and remains the future for the Texans at tight end. He is an integral part of the team's offense as a receiver and a blocker.

--WR David Anderson: RFA; $4.5M/3 yrs, $1M SB (Texans matched Broncos offer sheet).

--TE Joel Dreessen: RFA; tendered at $1.01M; $3.6M/3 yrs, guarantee unknown.

--S Nick Ferguson: UFA; terms unknown.

--DE Stanley McClover (not tendered as RFA); terms unknown.

--C/G Chris White: UFA; terms unknown.

--S Eugene Wilson: Potential UFA; $11.3M/3 yrs, SB unknown.

--DT Shaun Cody: UFA Lions; 3 yrs, terms unknown.

--QB Dan Orlovsky: UFA Lions; $9.15M/3 yrs, $2.4M SB.

--DE Antonio Smith: UFA Cardinals $35.5M/5 yrs, $12.5M guaranteed.

--S C.C. Brown: UFA Giants; $1.4M/1 yr, $400,000 SB/$300,000 base guarantee.

--S Will Demps (released).

--RB Ahman Green (released).

--LB Morlon Greenwood (released).

--QB Sage Rosenfels (traded Vikings).

--OT Ephraim Salaam (released).

--DE Anthony Weaver (released/failed physical).
