Houston Texans Strategy and Personnel 2008-10-28

--TE Joel Dreessen sprained his jaw during the game Sunday, but is not expected to be limited this week. He is expected to play Sunday at Minnesota.

--RB Ahman Green cramped up during the game and was still a little sore Monday. The Texans said he is day-to-day but that he likely will play Sunday.

--S Nick Ferguson will start again in place of Will Demps against the Vikings. The Texans are happy with how the veteran is playing.

--S Will Demps will play primarily on special teams for the second week in a row. He was demoted from the starting role last week.

--S Eugene Wilson has two interceptions this season. He plays in mostly nickel situations but will likely make another start this week.

PASSING OFFENSE: A -- The Texans had a great day in the air. The offensive line protected QB Matt Schaub, who was sacked only once. He completed 24 of 28 passes for 280 yards and three touchdowns. He finished with a passer rating of 144. Andre Johnson led the team with 143 receiving yards on 11 catches. Kevin Walter finished second with five catches for 70 yards and two touchdowns. There were no interceptions.

RUSHING OFFENSE: C -- The Texans had more success passing the ball than running it, and so they steered away from the running game for the most part. Rookie RB Steve Slaton had 15 carries for 53 yards. The team finished with a rushing average of 3.5 yards per carry. Slaton had one rushing touchdown of 20 yards in which he ended up dragging two defenders into the end zone for his best run of the day.

PASS DEFENSE: A -- The defense had two interceptions and kept Ryan Fitzpatrick from getting into too much of a rhythm. He completed just 20 of 32 passes for 155 yards. He threw no interceptions. T.J. Houshmandzadeh had eight catches for 54 yards, while Chad Johnson was held to five catches for 44 yards. The Texans even had a forced fumble on Mario Williams' lone sack of the game.

RUSH DEFENSE: B -- The Bengals' most effective part of their game was their ground attack, but they steered away from it because they trailed by so much. Cedric Benson had just 13 carries for 49 yards. Ryan Fitzpatrick was second on the team with seven carries for 42 yards.

SPECIAL TEAMS: A -- Jacoby Jones returned his first punt 73 yards for a touchdown. The other two punts were fair catches. He did have three kickoff returns for the first time this season, as Andre' Davis is out with a broken finger. Jones tallied 58 yards on the three kick returns. Kris Brown didn't have any field goals.

COACHING: A -- For the first time all season, the coaches on offense and defense put together a solid game plan that the players were able to handle for the full 60 minutes. The Texans controlled the ball from the beginning when Jones returned the first punt for a touchdown. They controlled it going into halftime and then the entire second half. It was a good performance for a team known for its inconsistency.
