Houston Texans Strategy and Personnel 2008-11-30

Houston Texans Strategy and Personnel 2008-11-30
The Texans are shuffling the offensive lineup so that they can try to fill the void left by RB Ahman Green (knee sprain). The Texans will start Steve Slaton and spell him with Ryan Moats. Moats has just 10 carries over the past two seasons. The Texans also signed RB Darius Walker to the practice squad in case they need him as well. Another running back could still be added.

Defensively, the Texans will again go with LB Xavier Adibi starting on the weak side. Morlon Greenwood will continue to back up all three positions. Dunta Robinson will start again at cornerback, and Antwaun Molden will play on the outside in a few series to keep him involved. With Robinson's return to the starting lineup, Fred Bennett is not getting as much playing time anymore.

PLAYER NOTES

--LG Chester Pitts (calf) played last week but is still at just about 85 percent. The Texans hope extra rest this week will help him.

-- QB Matt Schaub was able to do a few more drills in practice this week, but he still appears to be at least two weeks away from being able to participate in any games because of a torn MCL.

-- RB Steve Slaton (chest) is fully participating in practice. He will take the bulk of carries this week.

-- DT Amobi Okoye (ankle) is still recovering, but he is participating fully in practices and should be about 85 percent Sunday.

-- DT Travis Johnson (knee) is participating in practice, but may only be about 80-85 percent on Sunday. He will still start.

-- WR Andre' Davis may see more action on offense this week. The Texans will likely be passing a lot this week and Davis is now more acclimated to the offense and comfortable after missing almost a month with a finger injury.

--RB Ryan Moats (ankle) is slowed by an ankle injury, which doesn't bode well for the team since Moats is now their No. 2 back. He will be available Monday, but the Texans also want him to be able to practice this week and get more comfortable in the offense.

--LB Morlon Greenwood (ankle) is still slowed by the ankle. He was dressed for last week's game, but rarely played. He is backing up all three linebacker positions while he tries to get healthy again.

--LB DeMeco Ryans led the team in tackles last week and is playing better and better each week despite still having a sore ankle and shoulder to deal with.

GAME PLAN: The Texans want to stop the run. The Jaguars lost last week when they especially struggled to run the ball. This has not been a strength of the Texans defense this season. The tackles have consistently been pushed backyard, and the defense overall is having a hard time wrapping up running backs.

The defense also hopes to build on its five-turnover outing from last week. They will try to be more aggressive on defense, yet they will keep in mind that David Garrard is capable of running. They don't want to be aggressive and let him score on them with his feet.

Offensively, the key will be to take care of the ball. With Ahman Green out, the Texans will likely rely on their passing game. Matt Schaub had a tremendous passing day against the Jaguars earlier this season, and Sage Rosenfels could have the same this week if he can keep from throwing interceptions. The Jaguars have a porous secondary.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Texans RB Steve Slaton vs. Jaguars DT John Henderson. The Texans struggled to run against the Jaguars last time out, but this time could be even more difficult. Slaton is slowed by a chest injury and normal wear-and-tear of a rookie. Without Ahman Green to spell him, Slaton may get more than his typical amount of carries, but the production overall may drop off. The Texans hope enough rest this week could help rejuvenate Slaton, so they will hardly practice him leading him up to the game.

Texans DE Mario Williams vs. Jaguars QB David Garrard. Williams will be ready for Garrard to try to run the ball this time out. He beat the Texans with his feet earlier this season. But Williams will also likely be very motivated to get to Garrard and pull him down. Williams' best game last season came in primetime when the Texans were the Thursday night game. He had three sacks. Watch for Williams to turn it up another gear again this week. When he pushes himself, no one can block him.

INJURY IMPACT: LG Chester Pitts (calf) played last week but is still at just about 85 percent. The Texans hope extra rest this week will help him.

RB Steve Slaton (chest) is still hampered by an injury suffered two weeks ago. The Texans will rest him in practice this week so that he can take the bulk of carries against the Jaguars.

RB Ryan Moats (ankle) is slowed by an ankle injury, which doesn't bode well for the team since Moats is now their No. 2 back. He will be available Monday, but the Texans also want him to be able to practice this week and get more comfortable in the offense.

LB Morlon Greenwood (ankle) is still slowed by the ankle. He was dressed for last week's game, but rarely played. He is backing up all three linebacker positions while he tries to get healthy again.
