Plea moves Vick closer to a return

Plea moves Vick closer to a return
With a steady gaze and another apology, Michael Vick took an important step toward returning to pro Football.

The former star quarterback pleaded guilty in Virginia to a state dogfighting charge Tuesday, and the prosecutor dropped an animal-cruelty count.

Circuit Judge Samuel Campbell accepted the deal and gave Vick a suspended three-year sentence -- far less than the maximum 10-year term he could have faced.

The move clears the way for Vick's possible transition to a halfway house, and brings his aim of another chance at professional Football closer.

"I want to apologize to the court, my family, and to all the kids who looked up to me as a role model," Vick told the judge.

Vick was temporarily brought back to Virginia from Leavenworth, Kan., where he is serving a 23-month sentence after pleading guilty to bankrolling a dogfighting operation. In the federal case, Vick admitted helping kill six to eight pit bulls that did not perform well in test fights. Vick remained in Virginia on Tuesday afternoon awaiting transport back to Kansas. He is scheduled for release next July 20, and will serve three years of probation.

Report: Quinn done

Cleveland Browns quarterback Brady Quinn is done for the year after doctors revealed that the break to his right index finger has gotten worse since he tried to play through the injury, sources told FOXSports.com.

Team sources said that Quinn and the team made the decision together. Sources said that not only has the break in his right index finger worsened but that it is also starting to injure the tendons as well.

Derek Anderson will return as the starter.

Redskins cut Alexander

Former NFL MVP Shaun Alexander was released by the Washington Redskins on Tuesday after getting only 11 carries in five games. The Redskins replaced Alexander on the roster by signing defensive tackle Ryan Boschetti, who adds depth to an ailing defensive line.

Defensive end Andre Carter and defensive tackle Kedric Golston both suffered foot injuries and defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin hurt his shoulder in Sunday's 20-17 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

Ahman Green goes on IR

The Texans have placed running back Ahman Green on season-ending injured reserve after he hurt his left knee against Cleveland. The 31-year-old former Green Bay star was injured in the third quarter of Sunday's 16-6 win over the Browns. Green had had 294 yards in eight games this season. He also missed 10 games last year. Steve Slaton has emerged as Houston's go-to back with 774 yards and six touchdowns.

Jaguars get new punter

The Jacksonville Jaguars placed punter Adam Podlesh on injured reserve with a knee injury and signed free agent Steve Weatherford. The team also activated TE George Wrighster and DE Jeremy Mincey off the physically unable to perform list and waived CB Omare Lowe.

Hall semifinalists named

Bruce Smith, the NFL's career sack leader, and versatile defensive back Rod Woodson are among the four first-time-eligibles who made the list of 25 semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The other two are tight end Shannon Sharpe and defensive end John Randle, on a list that will be reduced to 15 before the final vote on Jan. 31 in Tampa, the day before the Super Bowl.
