Texans want to limit Garrard's scrambling
HOUSTON -- The Texans found a way to keep Jacksonville's David Garrard from beating them with his arm in the first meeting between these teams earlier this year. Then he found a way to beat them with his feet.
Garrard ran for two key first downs, including one on fourth-and-8, in the fourth quarter to help Jacksonville to a 30-27 overtime win.
This time, the Texans are determined to keep the mobile quarterback contained.
"He does a good job of running and throwing the ball," said linebacker DeMeco Ryans. "But if we can just keep him in the pocket and keep him in passing situations, I think we have the advantage when he's back there having to sit in the pocket. But if we don't contain him and let him get out and start running on you, then we have a double-whammy on our hands."
Return of Andre': Andre' Davis looked like he was back to his old self in his return last week after missing four games after finger surgery.
Davis returned a kick for a touchdown, but it was brought back because of a Houston penalty. The Texans are hoping that's an indication Davis can finish this season the way he did last year.
The seventh-year player had three kick returns for touchdowns in 2007, including two in Houston's season finale against Jacksonville.
"He was the fastest player on the field (Sunday), there's no doubt about that," coach Gary Kubiak said. "So, we'll get him involved. He held up well with his hand. It's a shame the return got called back but this is where he kind of flourished last year, the last six or seven weeks of the season. So, hopefully we see the same."
Slaton not limited: Rookie running back Steve Slaton, who has a severely bruised chest, was not limited in practice on Thursday.
That's a good sign for the Texans, who are short at the position after placing Ahman Green on the injured reserve with a knee problem earlier this week. Slaton leads the team with 774 yards rushing and six touchdowns.
He's been beat up in the last few weeks after participating in 69 plays earlier this month against the Vikings.
"(He) has been consistent and gotten better each week," Kubiak said. "It's a long haul for a rookie but he's bounced back and has played well the last few weeks and will have to play well for us the rest of the season."
